Casinos and local performing arts venues

Over the last few months, I have been involved with a number of my fellow performing arts center collegues in addressing the concerns the performing arts center community has with the casino legislation that is being considered on Beacon Hill.

Our small group of performing arts center professionals has had countless meetings with members of the house and senate to express our concerns that the performing arts centers in Massachusetts will lose the opportunity to promote certain acts and touring shows if resort casinos are allowed to present live entertainment as well.

Here's what has happened in many other states... Resort casinos come into a state. Entertainment venues are built within the casinos. Because casinos have so many more revenue streams than a performing arts center (via gaming, their own restaurants, etc), they are able and willing to pay much more to performers to perform at these casinos venues.

In exchange for writing "the big check," they are given exclusive rights to that performer or show within a radius (usually around 90 miles) for an extended period of time (usually 6 months). This "radius clause," as its called in the entertainment business, robs the local performing arts centers of the opportunity to present these acts in their local venues.

If performing arts centers aren't able to secure shows to present on their stages, the performing arts centers suffer greatly in terms of the amount and quality of their programming. As a result, lower attendances at these venues hurt not only the performing arts centers, but also area restaurants, businesses and municipalities.

I'm happy to say that many members of the senate and house took our concerns very seriously and at this point we are hopeful that there will be some language in any casino legislation that is passed, that will allow local performing arts centers to continue to be vibrant entertainment and economic engines across the state.

The process of meeting with members of the house and senate has been very eye opening. I've learned a heck of a lot about the real way that legislation works its way through the halls of the state house. I've also been happy to learn that our legislators understand the value that venues like Lowell Auditorium, and other performing arts centers in throughout the commonwealth, have in our communities.

Giving homage in a continually evolving artistic outlet, the Dark Star Orchestra recreates historic Grateful Dead set lists with compelling accuracy. Each night, the Chicago-based band decides on performing one show from the over 2,500 that the Grateful Dead originally performed during their 30 year tenure as fathers of improvisational rock. Dark Star Orchestra adapts their phrasing, voice arrangements, and even arranges specific musical equipment for the various eras in which they perform. At the end of every performance, the band announces the date and venue where the original show just covered took place. The group has their craft so well-refined that even members of the Dead themselves, rhythm guitarist/singer Bob Weir, drummer Bill Kreutzmann, and keyboardist Vince Welnick, have appeared on stage and performed with these live music interpreters.

The first footprints of Dark Star Orchestra can be traced back to 1997 when guitarist John Kadlecik contacted keyboardist Scott Larned with a concept: performing complete Grateful Dead shows out of history. When Scott mentioned having the same idea, John knew they were on to something. After slowly building a fan base at Martyrs nightclub in Chicago, Dark Star Orchestra has blossomed into a solid touring act, playing around 150 shows a year.

Stealing from Scott...consider it flattery

Call it copying, stealing, borrowing, or otherwise, but I've decided to copy/steal/borrow the good practices of our friend and neighbor Scott Plath at Cobblestones/Moonstones and offer a blog about the goings-on at the auditorium. I've enjoyed reading Scott's insights into the restaurant industry, and also admire his ability to keep everyone interested in what is happening (or has happened) at Cobblestones and Moonstones. Good job Scott, and thanks for the inspiration. If you are not reading Scott's blog, check it out at www.splath.com. He's also on Twitter at S_Plath.

We annouced out 2010-2011 Lowell Five Performing Arts Series last week. We've got a great series lined up for the coming season, including Legally Blonde, Grease, Spamalot, the Vienna Boys Choir Holiday Celebration, Fiddler on the Roof and A Chorus Line. I think its a good mix of new titles and old favorites. Subscription packages are available now for those who subscribed last year, and new subscriptions go on sale July 12. For more info, click here http://www.lowellauditorium.com/subscriptionGuidelines.aspx

Aside from our Lowell Five Performing Arts Series, we have also annouced a number of other shows for the 2010-2011 season, including some great concerts, a visit from the stars of TV's Deadliest Catch, and a couple of comedy shows. There are more shows "in the pipeline" as well, so stay tuned. Check out lowellauditorium.com for the currect line up and be sure to sign up for our email club while you are on the site. You'll get pre-sale opportunities for nearly all of our shows by becoming a member.

June is DANCE RECITAL season here at the auditorium. We've had hundreds of talented dance students on our stage over the past few weeks and it's great to see so many local kids get the opportnity to perform on our stage. They are all very talented.
